Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the prestigious cup on 14 different times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the French league winners and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

Yet, Marseille fired two times late to take a surprise lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the final seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing penalty win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
